It is important to seek happiness only within ourselves, because we cannot find it anywhere else but in ourselves. In today’s world much emphasis has been put on external things, such as, money, cars,
houses or an education, as a means to attaining happiness. However more and more people who have acquired this things have been searching harder and harder, for ways to attain happiness – as they have
only become more miserable, as their acquisitions grew in number. They go to seminars about happiness, buy books about happiness and go to far off lands to find gurus who can teach them about
happiness – and despite this they still can’t find happiness. This shows how rare happiness is and that it can’t be bought. Below are three things you can do to find happiness instantly. I know it seems surreal, but keep on reading.

- Happy thoughts
A lot of people think that in order to find happiness, one just needs to replace negative thoughts with
happy thoughts and they will be well on their way to happiness. But this is far from the truth, in fact
adopting new thoughts will only add to one’s unhappiness; similar to how acquiring more materials only
adds to one’s unhappiness. This is because thoughts are not ourselves and it is only through knowing
ourselves and being present with ourselves that we can find happiness. In simple terms we are
happiness itself, or much rather, we are consciousness bliss. Furthermore thinking happy thoughts
usually entails thinking about positive things, which we hope will happen in the future; such as, finally
getting a promotion we wanted, being accepted by people we admire or going to a holiday that we’ve
always dreamt of. Such thoughts are bad for us, as they are usually accompanied by a fear of “what if
they don’t happen”, which in turn causes us anxiety. Happy thoughts could also entail thinking about
positive past events; such as when were loved by people we admire, the day we got our first job, or
when we bought our first car. This thoughts are also bad for us, as they are incongruent with the current
state of our live – this can also bring about anxiety, because this train of thought will only make us desire
the same events to happen again. The only possibly positive one can think is “I am”, because the only
thing you know for certain is that you are, the past has disappeared and the future is uncertain. Both the
past and the future experience changes, therefore how can we be certain that they are what they
appear to be; yourself on the other has always been there as it is, and it continues to be, thus it is the
only thing we can positively say is as it appears to be. Therefore the only happy or positive thought one
should always keep in mind is “I am”.

2. Happy life
Another misconception is that for us to be happy, we need to have a happy life – a life where everything
goes our way. This often imaginary happy life, also necessitates labouring hard for the things we want to
make us feel complete. But what good is happiness if you have to work hard for it? Happiness should be
effortless and spontaneous, much like how it was for us in childhood. So instead of entirely abandoning
the concept of a happy life, let us redefine what a happy life is; a happy life is one of non-resistance and
full acceptance of the state of our lives, it is our willingness to let come what comes and let go of what
has past. It is the realization that we’re perfection itself, thereby our lives are the medium through
which we express this perfection; the expression of this perfection is reflected in how gracefully we
navigate through tough situations, and in our enthusiasm to carry out our daily duties to the best of our abilities. A happy life is one where there is the least concern for tomorrow, having the utmost confidence in ourselves that we will be able to take care of our needs. When the body ails, it is the only thing that we can think about; but once we have received medication to heal and we are well, we forget about it. Similarly pain in life is only there to bring our focus to ourselves, therefore realize you are complete – and forget all about yourself and live without self-concern, because you will take care of yourself unconsciously, just as the body unconsciously takes care of itself once it is healed.

- Be happy
We have established earlier that the only thing we know with certainty is that we are, thus we are the only truth in the world – meaning that everything in our lives depends on us. So the only way to be truly happy is to have the courage to be happy in spite of our circumstances, and recognize ourselves as the only truly independent thing in the world. It is of utmost importance to just be in order to be happy, in other words do not plan your way out of unhappiness, do not take any actions to rid yourself of unhappiness, in fact be mindful of the things you do and avoid doing anything unless it is necessary. Do not try to be yourself, because you do not know yourself yet – so far you have identified yourself by your past and your ambitions for the future. Let go of everything that you used to identify with yourself,
remain in the thought “I am”, and just be.
